Ever since I have learnt to cook this vegetable, which is seasonal, from China, just love to munch on these crunchy slices that I usually cook with meat and prawns. Remember though to remove the tough and fibrous skin before slicing them for use.

Flower Crabs With Hot & Sour Sauce


Today, ER and I actually wanted to cook curry flower crabs, but Rika suggested this version. Just like she said, "We have not eaten this dish for a long time." [She did not know they are flower crabs. She is not keen to eat them.]

This was due to her past experience of having a stomachache after eating flower crabs; Rika was reluctant to eat this at 1st! But, after a taste of the gravy, she exclaimed, "Very nice!" And finally with encouragement from ER and I, she ate one whole crab :)

We have yet to come across this dish from the eateries that we patronized. YH has suggested that the gravy would go well with other seafood :) and I agree with him!

Black Vinegar Trotter

It is almost a forgotten dish in my family menu until a friend ordered a bowl of this during a “Dim Sum” lunch. The lingering taste has certainly induced me to cook my own :)

Having one serving is not enough for YH, he has been asking me to cook this again! For those who love this, the fragrance of the sesame oil with those flavourful, sweet and tangy tastes of this dish surely would whet one’s appetite further!

Recipe:
Black Vinegar Trotter/Ginger Trotter

Ingredients:
1 pig trotter
1 bottle [375 ml]Chan Kong Thye black rice vinegar
400g young or old ginger - remove skin and wash
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1 cup boiling water [may use more water if you like]
brown sugar to taste
3 hard-boiled eggs [optional] - shelled

Method:
1. Clean & remove hair from the pig's trotters. Cut into serving pieces and blench in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Remove and drain
2. Heat Sesame Seed Oil. Fry ginger until fragrant and put in the blenched pig trotters and stir-fried well for 5 minutes.
3. Put (2) into a claypot or stock pot. Add vinegar, water, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil and leave to simmer for about 2 hours or until pig trotters become soft and tender.
4. Add shelled hard-boiled eggs [if used] 1/2 and hour before serving.

Fried Bean Sprouts With Fish Sauce


This is a dish that I picked up from my maternal home. Between, my eldest sister was my 1st teacher in cooking when I was a secondary student. I learnt a vegetable dish from her just before her marriage. From then on learning to cook with recipes is the norm.

Wonton Soup For Dinner

While it is a norm to use “choy sam” or mustard leaves to cook wonton soup whether in eateries or most homes, I beg to be different :) I have tried wonton with spinach, watercress, chrysanthemum greens/"Tong Hao", spring onion and long cabbage. All variations turned out to be delectable~
